News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Feb. 2, 2018: A lot has been said this week of the “Caribbean takeover” of the 2018 Grammy’s on Sunday night. But while many have reported on the obvious – the performances by Shaggy and Rihanna as well as Puerto Rican singers Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi and wins by Rihanna and Damian Marley, lost in the excitement is the fact that there were several other Caribbean roots artists who also won big – especially Puerto Rico-roots Bruno Mars who swept up the major wins including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. So while we celebrate this ‘Caribbean’ win, we also wanted to highlight the net worth of some of these Caribbean-born and Caribbean-roots artists from Grammy 2018. Here are the numbers you should know:
While Barbados-born superstar Rihanna left many talking after rocking the steps to South Africa’s popular gwara gwara dance and winning another Grammy for her collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, the singer is hands down one of the Caribbean’s richest superstars – inside and out. Rihanna’s net worth is estimated at $230 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth and that could grow a lot higher this year given all of the many business ventures the singer turned actress and entrepreneur has her hands in.
2: Bruno Mars
Peter Gene Hernandez, known professionally as Bruno Mars, was born in Hawaii but his roots goes to Puerto Rico. His father, whom he paid tribute to at the Grammys, is of half Puerto Rican and half Ashkenazi Jewish descent (from Ukraine and Hungary), and is originally from Brooklyn, New York. Of course by now everyone knows Mars swept the Grammys winning Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year but what many may now know is his net worth. The ‘Uptown Funk’ singer has accumulated to $110 million according to Celebrity Net Worth and is considered one of music’s most bankable musicians today.
3: Daddy Yankee
Puerto Rico-born Daddy Yankee heated up the night with Luis Fonsi on ‘Despacito’ but this Latin Hip Hop artist’s is also heating things up financially. Daddy Yankee, who was born Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez, has a net worth of some 30 million according to Celebrity Net Worth.
4: Damian Marley
Kingston-born Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley, the youngest son of reggae legend Bob Marley, took home his fourth reggae Grammy Sunday night, much to the surprise of some fans but this singer is also climbing the financial ladder on his own with a reported net worth of US$20 million.
5: Luis Fonsi
Puerto Rican singer and composer Luis Fonsi has been having a banner past year since co-writing ‘Despacito’ with Daddy Yankee. The video for the song quickly topped 2 BILLION views on YouTube. In April 2017, the song was remixed in English and Justin Bieber was brought in to sing a guest verse. This version of the song is also a monster smash hit. Fonsi’s net worth is now put at $16 million.
Jamaican born Grammy winning musician and DJ, Orville Richard Burrell CD, popularly known as Shaggy, left tongues wagging Sunday night after his performance with Sting on the Grammy stage and also his appearance with the singer along with host James Corden on a subway karaoke sketch. But did you know that the ‘It Wasn’t Me’ singer is worth a pretty solid $12 million? Not bad for a former Marine.
7: Camila Cabello
Cuban-born singer Camila Cabello made a statement with her speech at the Grammy’s on Dreamers and DACA adding that she too is a ‘dreamer.” But unlike most ‘Dreamers,” Cabello, who was born in Cojimar, Cuba, is worth a solid $6 million.
Dominican/Trini rapper Cardi B has moved from American reality television personality to rapper, thanks to the success of her single “Bodak Yellow.” That along with her recent collaboration with Bruno Mars has pushed her net worth up to $4 million today, according to Celebrity Networth.
