Sept. 29, 2017: Several Puerto Rico-born and Puerto Rico-roots stars are stepping up to help raise much needed cash to rebuild the island following the devastating blow of Hurricane Maria on the cash strapped US Caribbean territory. Here are the stars who are pitching in:
1: Jennifer Lopez
The Bronx-born, Puerto Rico-roots singer, actress and entrepreneur has donated US$1 million from proceeds of her Las Vegas show to help provide hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.
2: Daddy Yankee
Puerto Rican singer and rapper, Daddy Yankee, who has been making personal appeals during his recent concerts in New York and Chicago, has donated USD 1 million as well to help “rebuild Puerto Rico.”
3: Marc Anthony
Puerto Rico national Marc Anthony is urging all to donate to Puerto Rico and used his Twitter account this week to clap back at Donald Trump, telling the US President: “Mr. President shut the fuck up about NFL. Do something about our people in need in #PuertoRico. We are American citizens too.”
4: Ricky Martin
Puerto Rico-born star Ricky Martin has raised over $366,000 through his youcaring.com/rickymartin for Puerto Rico so far.
5: Rosie Perez
The Puerto Rico roots actress took to Twitter as well to urge all to support and help raise much needed supplies for the island on September 23rd in Brooklyn at Ladder Company 114.
6: Nicky Jam
Puerto Rican singer and songwriter, Nicky Jam, best known for hits such as “Travesuras,” is reaching out to his millions of fans via social media and promised to do a concert “so that all that all of the proceeds go to help Puerto Rico.”
7: DH Carlos Beltran
Puerto Rico-born Astros baseball star pledged $1 million toward recovery efforts, and he’s raising money through his foundation, too.
8: Yadier Molina
Puerto Rico-born Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the island with the goal of raising $1 million. In addition to raising money, Molina also intends to direct money he has put into his foundation for relief and rebuilding efforts. He has so far raised over USD 100,000 of his goal.
9: Jorge Posada
Former New York Yankees great Jorge Posada, who was born in Puerto Rico, has set up a fundraising site aimed at helping the island.
10: J.J. Barea
NBA player J.J. Barea, who is also from Puerto Rico, has launched an effort as well.
11: Carmelo Anthony
NBA star Carmelo Anthony, whose roots extend to Puerto Rico, has already raised over USD 200,000 for the devastated island via YouCaring.
12: Lin Manuel Miranda
Hamilton star, Lin Manuel Miranda is also pitching in to help his parents homeland. The Tony winning creator of Hamilton has partnered with the Hispanic Federation to create a fund for Hurricane Maria relief. “There’s a lot that needs to be done over the next few months,” he said in a video posted on Twitter. “The work begins here.”
13: Gina Rodriguez
In addition to echoing Miranda’s call for donations to the Hispanic Federation on Twitter, Actress Gina Rodriguez and her fellow Puerto Rican Jane the Virgin castmates, Andrea Navedo and Ivonne Coll, have called for donations to DirectRelief through a video The CW posted. “We are stronger together,” Rodriguez said.
14: Wisin Y Yandel
Reggaeton stars Wisin and Yandel have both also stepped up to the plate and are joining the many Puerto Rican musicians helping raise money through United for Puerto Rico, posting a video entirely in Spanish on the relief effort’s Instagram.
