CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. May 18, 2009: The jobless rate in the Caribbean is rising, with the loss of another 900 jobs in Jamaica.
The 900 employees have been given the pink slip by Jamaica’s bauxite company, ALPART.
The mining and refinery company announced it was suspending operation for at least a year on Friday. The move follows similar action by two other plants, due to reduced demand for alumina.
The latest Jamaica job losses add to several hundred already suffered by other regional nations, due to the downturn of the tourism sector. Last week, another Bahamas resort announced it was shutting down this month end, a decision that will cost 500 employees their jobs.
