Caribbean Sports – These Two Caribbean Islands Are In The Winter Olympics

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Fri. Feb. 9, 2018: The Caribbean may be a warm weather destination year round but two of its islands will be in this year’s Winter Olympic Games, which opens in Pyeongchang, South Korea today, Friday, Feb. 9th.

Jamaica will compete in the bobsleigh and skeleton competitions while Puerto Rico will compete in Alpine skiing. Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian, Carrie Russell and Audra Segree are the first Jamaican women to qualify for the bobsleigh competition at the Games.

Anthony Watson is the first athlete to represent Jamaica in skeleton at the Winter Games. He received a late call-up to the competition after several countries declined places for the event.

Charles Flaherty, 17, is representing Puerto Rico. Although Flaherty was born in the US, he has resided in Puerto Rico for several years which made him eligible to represent the island. Flaherty will become the first athlete from the country to compete for Puerto Rico since 2002.

The Winter Games run from February 9 to 25.
