Haitian Held Without Bail In Migrant Smuggling

CaribWorldNews, MIAMI, FL, Thurs. May 21, 2009: A 33-year-old Haitian national and green card holder is being held without bail in the deadly migrant smuggling case of May 13th.

Jimmy Metellus was remanded to jail yesterday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Ann Vitunac and told he could possibly face the death penalty in the case that left 10 migrants dead.

Metellus is accused of piloting a boat overloaded with migrants that capsized off South Florida, killing several. He’s charged with alien smuggling resulting in death.

He has, however, told investigators that a smuggler hired him to pilot the vessel to Miami from the Bahamas with about 30 migrants on board. Several who survived were Haitian and one a Jamaican national. They all face deportation back to their native lands.
