Janet Jagan Among Folk Festival Award Winners

CaribWorldNews, BROOKLYN, NY, Thurs. July 2, 2009: Former Guyana President, Janet Jagan, who passed away in March of this year, is among the honorees of the 2009 annual Folk Festival Awards.

The late President will be honored posthumously with The Guyana Cultural Association Award, officials of the Guyana Cultural Association of New York announced this week.
The awards ceremony is set for the Brooklyn Borough Hall on September 2, 2009.

Other honorees include Magda Lois Muriel Pollard, who will be presented with The GCA Wordsworth McAndrew Lifetime Achievement Award as well as Donna Ramsammy-James, and Western Union Company, who will also receive The Guyana Cultural Association Award.

Pollard has had an illustrious career as an educator, author and administrator. She spent a substantial part of her career as a lecturer and the Principal of the Carnegie School of Home Economics in Guyana.
Ramsammy-James is a choreographer, a designer, and international creative consultant who `celebrates and represents, the rich diversity of the Caribbean.`

Western Union is being honored for its philanthropic efforts that include `supporting cultural inclusion.`

Organization officials said the honorees were selected from nominations by the Guyanese Diaspora for demonstrating `by their individual or entity`s action a sense of purpose in promoting Guyanese creativity and excellence.` 

A committee annually evaluates each nomination, taking into consideration relevant aspects of the Guyana Cultural Association published selection criteria.
