CaribWorldNews, SANTO DOMINGO, DR, Tues. June 9, 2009: A 53-year-old man wanted for sexual abuse charges was arrested in the Dominican Republic after an airing on `America’s Most Wanted.`
Joseph Christian Fontana, formerly of Green Acres Avenue in Fort Walton Beach, had been on the lam since 2006 when he disappeared after finding out the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was investigating allegations of him having sexual misconduct with minor children.
Fontana was profiled in April of this year on `America’s Most Wanted.` The release said the episode aired in the Dominican Republic, too, due to suspicions Fontana might be in that area. A tip from the show was forwarded to the Sheriff’s Office in late April that gave a specific address for Fontana.
The U.S. Marshal’s Foreign Field Office in Santo Domingo and local law enforcement there took Fontana into custody about 4 p.m. Friday.
Investigators say Fontana had been visiting a single mother and her three children in their home between 2001 and 2006 after meeting the woman at a local church. The report said he eventually committed sexual offenses against her children.
Fontana is a registered sex offender and has been arrested for crimes against children three times prior to Friday’s arrest.
Fontana is being held in the custody of the U.S. Marshals in the Dominican Republic, but it’s unknown when his extradition will happen.
