Trinidadian Rapper Prepares For First Album

Aug. 25, 2010: Trinidad-born rapper Nicki Minaj is gearing up for the launch of her first album.The rapper is shown looking like a Barbie in her most recent promo photo with photographer Howard Huang. Minaj is shown looking pretty in pink, striking a deadly pose and brandishing a hot magenta sword over her clementine tuft of hair in front of a rocky cove.The Young Money rapstress is set to launch her debut album Pink Friday in stores on November 23rd.Minaj was born Onika Maraj in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago and is of mixed Indian and African ancestry. She lived in Trinidad with her grandmother until age 5 when she moved to the Queens, New York. According to Minaj, she grew up in a home with an abusive father who drank alcohol, did drugs, and once tried to kill her mother by setting the house on fire.She has stated that life was difficult growing up, but that `music helped her through it`. She attended Elizabeth Blackwell Middle School 210 and graduated from LaGuardia High School. At LaGuardia, a school specializing in music and the visual and performing arts, Minaj participated in the drama program. She once worked at a Red Lobster restaurant in the Bronx.
