World In Earliest Days Of Flu Pandemic – WHO

CaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. June 15, 2009: The world is now at the start of the 2009 influenza pandemic. That`s the word from the World Health Organization.

Dr Margaret Chan, Director-general of the WHO, moved the level of swine flu influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6 late Friday, or to a pandemic stage.  But the WHO said it still considers the overall severity of the influenza pandemic to be moderate.

The change in phases comes as the reported number of cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection continues to grow in the Caribbean. The region`s number of reported cases is now over 120.

The Dominican Republic leads the way with 91 while Jamaica now has 11 cases. Cuba has jumped to six while Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados have each reported a increase to three. The Cayman Islands has reported two cases while Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Martinique and Dominica have reported only one case so far, according to WHO data.

The global total stands close to 30,000 with 145 deaths.
